Changelog: Defunct newspapers, ownership changes, publication frequency reductions
2011
2010
- Dec. 21: Torstar completed its sale of its portion of the Globe and Mail to The Woodbridge Co. Ltd.
- Sept. 7: Metro Canada launched Metro Play, which isn't exactly a newspaper as such, but rather just the crosswords, sudokus, comics and so on that you would find in a newspaper. However, we've chosen to list it as a separate entity from Metro Toronto because the latter is a morning paper, while Metro Play appears in the afternoons, and is magazine size, not tabloid size.
- July 16: It's the big -30- for the Nelson Daily News (published since 1902) and Prince Rupert Daily News (published since 1911). Today was their final print run as new owner Black Press closed them a few weeks after buying them from Glacier Media.
- July 13: Postmedia Network completed its purchase of the bankrupt CanWest newspaper chain.
- Jan. 23: Windsor, N.S. The Valley Today ceased publication as of Jan. 23 after just three months.
Previous
- Ceased publication: Quebecor's Sarnia Sun and Chatham Sun free dailies have folded as did 24 Heures Gatineau-Ottawa on May 9, 2008. So have Torstar/Metroland's Northumberland News Free Daily and Niagara This Week Free Daily, although Metroland's community papers continue in those markets. Canwest Global's free dailies, Ottawa RushHour, Calgary RushHour and Edmonton RushHour have folded and its national free daily, Dose has also folded, although it continues as a website. Halifax Daily News (1974–Feb. 12, 2008) was replaced by Metro Halifax later in the week.
- Mergers: Black Press has merged some free dailies, including the Campbell River Mirror Daily into the Comox Valley Record Daily and the Parksville Qualicum Beach News Daily into the Nanaimo News Bulletin Daily. They also merged the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows News Daily and the Port Coquitlam Tri-City News Daily into the Langley Golden Ears Daily. Quebecor's Port Hope Guide merged with Cobourg Daily Star and Colborne Chronicle (which wasn't a daily) to create Northumberland Today.
- Formerly daily: Osprey Media's Lindsay Post reduced publication to twice a week as of May 18, 2007, while the Kirkland Lake Northern News dropped to three times a week prior to their sale to
Quebecor. The independent Flin Flon Reminder has also reduced publication to three times a week. Polish newspaper Gazeta (Toronto ed.) has dropped to three times a week according to their about us page. Black Press has reduced the free Terrace-Kitimat-Prince Rupert Northern Daily to three times a week but has added Smithers/Bulkley Valley and Houston papers to the area it covers.
